Since the U.S.-led war on Iraq started two weeks ago, much attention has been devoted to the demands and expectations of the country’s Shia Muslims, Kurds, and Turkomans. But little has been said about Iraq’s Christians, the majority of them known as Assyrians and Chaldeans. RFE/RL takes a closer look at the hopes and fears of this group, whose history is intrinsically linked with that of ancient Mesopotamia.

Long-running attempts by Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist leaders to consolidate their positions with state assistance have entered a new phase with the creation of a public-parliamentary commission. The new commission plans to propose draft laws to parliament and lobby the government in support of “traditional spiritual and moral values“.

In what may be a small breakthrough for religious liberty, Vietnam’s religion authorities invited five leaders of Protestant house church organizations and non-denominational missions to Hanoi for “informal talks” on March 5. Such a meeting is rare in Vietnam, where the Bureau of Religious Affairs and other governmental bodies rarely consult the religious groups they are supposed to control. Together, the Christian delegation represented more than 1,400 illegal house congregations and hundreds of evangelists.
