Dhaka, Mar 7 (IANS) – The Islami Ain Bastabayan Committee circulated pamphlets at an anti-war rally Thursday calling for the country’s constitution to be based on Islamic edicts.
Around 50,000 people took part in the rally to protest a U.S. attack on Iraq.
The Islami Ain Bastabayan, or Committee for the Implementation of Islamic Laws, is part of the Islamic Oikya Jote, which is a coalition member in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government.
“Fatwa was there in the past, it exists now and will continue in the future. Only fatwa will be the constitution,” proclaims the leaflet.
The Bangladesh High Court had ruled in January 2001 that any fatwa or legal opinion not given by a court is illegal. Referring to the ruling, some Islamic groups here called the judges infidels.
