United Kingdom: controversy over ‘Fat Buddha’ in Durham

Is naming a Chinese restaurant the ‘Fat Buddha’ provocative and likely to upset Buddhists? Buddhists in Britain don’t think so, but the Durham City Council believes it is offensive to the religion. It has expressed its misgivings in a letter to Eddi Fung, a Buddhist businessman who wants to call his new Chinese restaurant in Durham the ‘Fat Buddha’.

United Kingdom: bill on women bishops could trigger church-state crisis

United Kingdom: Hindu, Muslim, other minority chaplains in British army

The first Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Buddhist chaplains appointed by the British army to cater to the spiritual needs of soldiers from the minority religions have taken up their posts. The number of soldiers following these religions is low, but officials believe that a beginning has been made and that the appointment of the four chaplains will encourage more youngsters from these religions to join the armed forces.

United Kingdom: ecumenical body faces post-Christendom shake-up

The ecumenical body set up to enable the Churches to think, work and pray together, has announced that it is to radically reform in the context of ‘post-Christendom’. Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (CTBI) says that is having to face the fact that its member Churches have shrinking resources to fund the work they wish to do together and have changing priorities as ecumenism is mainstreamed into church life.

United Kingdom: non-Christian chaplains to be appointed by armed forces

Chaplains from Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh communities are being sought by the Ministry of Defence. About 740 personnel have declared themselves to be from the four religions, but only Christian chaplains are employed by the MoD.

United Kingdom: Soar is the new Ganges for British Hindus

The river Soar in Leicestershire has been officially approved as the ‘Ganges’ where British Hindus and Sikhs can scatter the ashes of their dead, instead of flying to India to perform the last rites.
