Following a speech by President Emomali Rakhmonov stating that three suspected Tajik terrorists have been held by the USA in Guantanamo Bay, the operation of a medressah in Northern Tajikistan is being prevented, 152 mosques were closed down, loudspeakers removed from many and 20 per cent of Imams removed from office.

President Pervez Musharraf has ordered a halt to the mushrooming of madrassas and mosques in the Pakistani capital in what is being viewed as a move aimed at thwarting religious extremism and possible terrorist strikes.

Catholics are leading the pack of immigrants flocking the United States, with a large chunk of newcomers originating from the Philippines and Latin America, a recently released study showed.
The Iraqi holy cities of Al-Najaf and Karbala are centers of religious learning for Shi’a Muslims from all over the world. Their importance as sacred hubs of Shi’ism was suppressed during the rule of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. But now, many Shi’a clerics are returning to Iraq, and the holy cities are regaining their former prominence.

In Azerbaijan, government hostility to the idea of religious freedom appears to derive from officials’ fear of social forces they cannot control and dislike of pluralism. The main victims are Muslims, whose faith is regarded as a potential challenge and whose communities face government interference and control, and minority faiths the government tries to restrict.

The 12 June concordat between the Orthodox Church and the state has given the Orthodox extensive influence in state bodies. The concordat means the state now accepts the Orthodox designation of Belarus as its “canonical territory“, and commits the state and the Church to work together in “the common fight against pseudo-religious structures“.

There is a heated debate in the Anglican Church over what place, if any, homosexuals should have in the church. The church’s new leader, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, has liberal views on the issue, and favors acceptance of gays and lesbians, even in leadership positions. But his view is not universally shared. The controversy is threatening to split one of the world’s largest churches.
